In fact, big companies like Microsoft and banks all do this kind of background check. Nobody is against it. My current employer in the U.S. even contacted Canadian police to check my history.
Chinese RealEstate agents have been using these words to pump up the house price in San Francisco/Bayarea for years, we will see whether it will continue to work or not in a few years.
Gold is and should be used to hedge systematic crash. In that sense, I think is better hold real gold than GLD kind of stuff.

Why? The reason is quite simple too.
I don't know how to predict the market, therefore, I don't even try.
