There will always be stereotypes for different people, like blacks, Latinos, Japanese, Indians, so on and so forth, and people will always see and treat them according to the stereotype to a degree. For most, racial profile is not even a conscious pursuit, it just happens. Don't tell me Americans think Chinese and Japanese the same, even though we do look similar in an American's eyes. Why? It's certainly because Japan's tremendous economic achievement 20/30 years ago.
The society is not a perfect place and nobody lives in vacuum. Don't be naive to think one can exist in this world as a abstract human being. We as individual persons can affect little on the image of China as a nation or Chinese as an ethnic group, just like individual Japanese can not boost or damage their nation's reputation either. It's the strength of the country behind us that matters. And like it or not, no matter where you go and what you do, this country will stick to you as a backdrop, and affect your life in a obvious or subtle way. |
