TODAY IS A LOW VOLUME AFFAIR: There will be

few traders around today, although it could become quite

volatile around 1pm EST when the US Treasury releases

its results of the 7-year note auction. However, the data on

this auction is rather limited; there have only been nine

auctions in recent history as sales of the 7-y note were

halted in April 1993 and then restarted them in February

2009. Here are a few thoughts:.

• Today’s auction size is the largest on record. The

sale is $1B larger than the October sale. Auction
sizes have increased seven times

since they were reinstated in February.

• The demand for the last for the last

nine auctions has been mixed. The

average cover ratio is 2.53 with the

largest being 2.82 in June and the

weakest being 2.11 in February. The

July, August,

• September and October auctions were

strong with cover ratios of 2.63, 2.74

and 2.79 and 2.65 respectively. The

tail was much wider at the October

auction at 12.1 bps. The average for

the tail is 7.8 bps.

• The July auctions had an above

average tail but the September

auction’s was the narrowest at6.8bps

since June’s 2.9bps.

In other words, the auction isn’t likely to be a

catalyst for higher stock prices.
