How to catch gap-up?

I do not think there is any clue for daytraders to catch gap-up. That is swingtraders' benefit.

Yes, we do.

As matter of a fact, I only used this method to trade a while last year. This problem is you have to monitor many many gap up/down stocks, and not every stock eventually is tradable. But spot and get in the trade,  it has very high success rate.

Which direction is the favored direction?

favored direction is the direction you will make money.  if stock closing price in the top area of the daily price range and the index also closing the same way around the daily high, then the high chance that the stock you are looking at will gap up next trading day.  You know the momentum is good for long side in this case.  I think that is what Brainteaser's example about.
