Robyn Peoples and Sharni Edwards became Northern Ireland's first legally married same-sex couple. Same-sex marriage was finally extended to Northern Ireland in July 2019, as part of a commitment by Westminster in the event that devolution was not restored by 21 October 2019. It has been legal in England, Wales and Scotland since 2014.

This year's Oscars made history when South Korean film Parasite was named best picture, making it the first non-English-language film to take the top prize. Bong Joon-ho collected the prize for best director and also took the best original screenplay award.
