Why bother to buy gold anyway?

Actually, I am just a beginner in the stock market, a lot of things I don't know or don't understand. This post's contents were just found by an accident, because I closed my USERX, and want to find a good gold mutual fund instead, but just think I might compare ETF GLD as well. Then I noticed the return discrepancies....

Compare to other members here, I am nothing indeed...

I think gold is very volatile, no-load gold mutual funds are low cost, therefore, provide us a platform to play gold.

That is just what I think.....
