windows 7

When I double click "local area connection", it shows the speed is 100Mbps.
But the vendor said it's Gigabyte NIC.

How can I double check the NIC is 100Mbps or 1GB from some other 3rd party software?

Thanks a lot!

NIC is Gbps doesn't mean your LAN connection is Gb LAN,  normally the LAN connection is 10M or 100M(only when your network cabling is Category 5 or above),  for a Gb LAN connection, I guess only true if you have a fibre optical cable connection to your computer.

Take it easy,  100Mb LAN is more than enough for a PC usage, even you are doing realtime streaming with HD movie.

My LAN is 1000Mbps. I know, and I am 100% sure.

My motherboard has 2 Gigabyte ports, one of them died today (when it worked, it showed '1 Gbps'), now the other one only shows 100Mbps. I think the motherboard manufacturer lied.

that's Asus.

Again, the topic is to discuss how to tell a NIC is 100M or 1G from non-windows software, it's not to discuss the need for 1G network or if my network environment is capable of 1G.

Any network gurus out there?

If you have the Gb LAN connection, my guess is on the NIC card option setting maybe.

I know in WindowsXP ,  you can change the NIC's speed/duplex mode option in the Control Panel, by clicking the Network Connection Icon in the 'Advanced Option' tab, normally it's 'Auto Mode',  and if the NIC is a Gb card, it must have 1000M option.

Hope this can help a little.  Or you can ask Google for any question.

Good luck.

Yes. Thanks.

When I change speed/duplex to 1G Full duplex, it still shows 100Mbps.
I guess Asus cheats their customers. fxxk off, never buy any Asus products again.

这个简单,找第二台gigabit NIC电脑,试试传递数据。。。
有时候你的router/switch上挂个100Mbps的物件,会把整个network变成100mbps

no, all my network is running gigabyte.
It's confirmed this so called Gigabyte port only runs at 100Mbps.

Shame on Asus.

PPT, are you running a server farm in your basement? A Gb network is superb for any PC application.

Try change the cable or switch port for this NIC card, see if anything wrong here. If no effect,  I guess it's the NIC card itself.

It's the damn NIC port on Asus motherboard.
Once I put a $15 Gigabyte NIC in my computer, everything is back to normal and running at 1Gbps.

Asus sucks. I won't buy any ASUS products in my lifetime.

Come on, a bad cable can drop your link speed to 100M, even 10M

I Gigabit NIC means to support speed up to 1Gbps, It doesn't means it only running at 1Gbps.

That's not true.

It's packet based, not physical switching based.

I only know network speed normally has 10M/1000/1000M, 1000M is also 1Gbps. That's what I want.

That's 8 times difference. Haha...

I think PPT knows it clearly, he is just not happy with the NIC on his PC's motherboard.

PPT,  I think you've nailed it by testing a add-on Gb NIC card,  since your NIC ports used to be working well with Gb bandwith, now it might be some damage caused the NIC card can't negotiate a Gb link.

I don't think 100M and 1Gbps will show any different as Router/Firewall is the bottleneck. You can check the usage%. merely above 1% under 1Gbps link.
If you don't copy big files locally.

I use wireless all the time, never see any problem.
