Nokia sacrifices profits to defend its market share. The upcoming new high end products N8, N9 etc will help lift the profit margins for sure in H2...
According to Nokia, operators so far have given very good feedback for N8 smartphone.
London -(Dow Jones)- Global smartphone shipments surged 43 in the second
quarter from a year earlier to 60 million units, while Apple Inc.s (AAPL)
market share slipped amid criticism of the antenna design for its iPhone 4 and
Nokia Corp. (NOK) widened its lead over competitors, research firm Strategy
Analytics said Thursday.
Smartphones made up 19 of total handset volumes in the quarter, the company
said.
Nokias market share grew to 40.3 from 38.8 the previous quarter, due to
competitive pricing and heavy promotion. Apples market share slipped to 14.1
from 15.9 amid criticism that the iPhone 4s poor antenna design led to
dropped calls. Blackberry maker Research in Motion Ltd. (RIMM) remained in
second place, with its market share falling slightly to 18.8, from 19.1.
Sales were driven by healthy operator subsidies, competition between vendors,
and a rising number of cheaper models built around operating systems such as
Google Incs (GOOG) Android and Nokias key smartphone platform Symbian,
Strategy Analytics said.
The Apple antenna-gate saga highlights two key issues facing the global
smartphone industry, said Neil Mawston, who wrote the research. First, the
risk of device failure for all vendors will continue to rise as smartphones
become more complex to design. And second, smartphone vendors and operators can
differentiate their brands by offering good after-sales service when things go
wrong.
Apples relatively slow response to the antenna problem damaged the brand,
leaving it more vulnerable to rivals including Nokia, Android, Blackberry, and
Motorola Inc. (MOT), he added.
Competition is intensifying in the global smartphone industry, Mawston said,
with established brands struggling to raise prices and profits in the face of
competition from a widening range of vendors from telecoms, PC and consumer
electronics industries.
Nokia earlier Thursday reported a sharp fall in second quarter net profit
after a profit warning last month. Even though its market share grew in the
quarter, it faces longer-term challenges in competing effectively with the
iPhone and Android-based devices.
