Is it for SP500/spy/etc. only, or it is also good for individual stocks?

I know one person is using ^SSEC SMA(5) as a flag, to decide trading stocks or not, no short in "A" stocks. Since I don't buy Chinese stocks, I did not pay too much attention to it.
