Well, tragedy sells or tragic story sells.  A story can have either a tragic ending or a happy ending.

Unfortunately, most good stories have tragic endings because people usually remember tragic stories more impressively and much longer. This might be related to the fundamental human nature that bad things or hateful things are often remembered longer than good ones.

The story "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare is a very good one because it has a very tragic ending.

If 林黛玉 and 贾宝玉 got married and lived happily afterward the story of Dream of the Red Chamber would not have been as good as the current one.

It is generally believed that when 金庸 was writing his 《神雕侠侣》 his original intention was also to have a tragic ending so that 杨过 and 小龙女 would not meet again after 小龙女 jumped off from the 断肠崖. At the time, many readers sensed 金庸's intention and they were all upset. They liked to see a happy ending. They wanted to see 好人有好报, 好人大团圆。金庸 also had a soft heart so he yielded to readers' demand and gave a happy ending to the story of 《神雕侠侣》, which significantly reduced the literature and historical value of this novel.
