Blood is seen on the headrest of a vehicle at the scene of a fatal shooting in Minneapolis on Wednesday, January 7. Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old US citizen, was killed when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot into her vehicle during an encounter that morning. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Good tried to “weaponize her vehicle” and that the agent opened fire out of self-defense. State and local officials have strongly disputed that claim. The setting was symbolic. Mamdani was sworn in on the platform of the old City Hall subway station underneath City Hall Park in Manhattan – an architectural marvel where tiled, arched ceilings, colored glass skylights and brass chandeliers have laid dormant since the station was shuttered in 1945. Mamdani, a 34-year-old immigrant from Uganda, is the city’s first Muslim mayor, first South Asian mayor and the youngest mayor to hold the high-profile office in more than a century. This photo, posted by US European Command on Wednesday, January 7, shows the Russian-flagged oil tanker Marinera in the Atlantic Ocean. US forces boarded and seized the aging, rusting tanker, formerly known as the Bella 1, on Wednesday following a weeks-long chase on the high seas. The tanker was sanctioned by the United States in 2024 for operating within a “shadow fleet” of tankers transporting illicit Iranian oil. Last month, the US Coast Guard attempted to seize the vessel while it was heading to Venezuela to pick up oil. But the ship’s crew refused to be boarded and made an abrupt turn into the Atlantic.
