Hughes flirts with no-hitter in Yankees win

Phil Hughes was positively dominant tonight. He struck out a career-high 10, walked two and allowed only an infield single through 7.1 nearly no-hit innings. The Yankees gave him a much-deserved 3-1 win, with a save for Mariano Rivera. It was the Yankees sixth straight win, and assured them a win of their first five series for the first time since 1926. Hughes lost the no-hitter when Eric Chavez chopped the ball back to the mound to lead off the eighth inning. It hit off Hughes, who couldn’t find the ball in time to make the play at first.

So the Yankees turned a triple play, hit two home runs and got a complete game from CC Sabathia… but lost the game? “We had some weird things happen today,” Joe Girardi said.

The Yankees still won the series, and the details of a 4-2 game in April will probably be forgotten by August. Even the weird argument between Dallas Braden and Alex Rodriguez will be mostly forgotten within a month.

But the triple play will be worth remembering.

“I didn’t think that was a triple play at all,” Girardi said. “You don’t see it very often like that, where the guy has to take a step to his right and then run to the bag.”

CC Sabathia called it “just straight lucky” that Kurt Suzuki rolled over a changeup down and away. It got to Rodriguez quickly, and he went to his right to step on third base before twirling to throw to second. That’s where Robinson Cano made the quick turn.

“It feels like a double play,” Cano said. “But when you walk off the field, you see the fans giving you a standing ovation so we must have done something good.”

Not such a good day for CC Sabathia, who walked six for the second time in his career. The last time was in 2004, also in Oakland.

“I was all over the place,” Sabathia said. “Didn’t really have command of anything. Changeup was decent, but that was the only thing that really kept me in the game.”

When Sabathia walked the lead-off hitter and the No. 3 hitter on four pitches in the first inning, Dave Eiland came to the mound to talk to his ace. Sabathia’s next pitch was a three-run home run by Suzuki, which stood as the difference in the game.

Sabathia’s first two walks came around to score, and his lead-off walk in the fourth — plus Cano’s throwing error — led to the A’s fourth run.

“I think I might have walked their lefties four times, and that’s just ridiculous,” Sabathia said.
Rodriguez said he was expecting a bunt on the triple play ball. He also called his throw to second base, “a little Hail Mary.”

• Cano’s throwing error in the fourth ended a 12-game errorless streak for the Yankees.

• Mark Teixeira was 1-for-4 with a home run and seemed to hit balls hard all game. “Probably the four best at-bats I’ve had all year,” he said.

• Even with the loss, the Yankees have won each of their first five series this season. The franchise hadn’t done that since 1926. “You like to leave on a winning note,” Girardi said. “But the bottom line is we won this series and we’re going to try to win another one in Anaheim.”

• Francisco Cervelli has now started three games — all with Sabathia on the mound — and he has five hits. This was his second straight two-hit game.

• With today’s home run, Marcus Thames is batting .545 with a .909 slugging percentage against lefties this season.

• Sabathia has two complete games this season. One was a rain-shortened game, the other was a loss.

The good, the bad and the crazy

At one point yesterday afternoon, Brian Costa and I started laughing at the scene we’d just left behind.

The Yankees were not playing in Anaheim, but the Dodgers clubhouse had been full of more New York writers than L.A. writers. When Joe Torre finally walked into the dugout, he made a few cracks at George King, then said the obvious about tonight’s game.

“It’s going to be crazy,” he said. “But that’s fine.”

Yankees fans seem torn at best, angry at worst. Alex Rodriguez seems indifferent to his old manager, but the Core Four can’t wait to see Torre again. Me? I have no strong feelings about the man. As a player he had some great years on St. Louis teams that my dad really loved, and until I got this job, that was my strongest connection to him.

But I tend to agree with Mike Vaccaro: Yes, the ending was ugly, and that should not be forgotten, but it also should not erase some of the great years in this franchise’s history.

These next three games are going to be crazy, and you’re going to be pounded over the head with images and stories of Joe Torre. If you’re not sick of them already, you probably will be by Sunday.

But there’s also a lot to be enjoyed about this weekend, and I hope you’re able to do that as well.

All the build up centered on Joe Torre and the Core Four, but it was Alex Rodriguez and CC Sabathia who stole the show tonight in Los Angeles. Derek Jeter had two hits, Jorge Posada had an RBI and Mariano Rivera struck out the side for his 17th save, but it was Sabathia who dominated the Dodgers through eight innings and it was Rodriguez who hit his second home run in three games to give the Yankees the lead in a 2-1 win.

Two Yankees games to air in 3D

The YES Network is breaking new ground this weekend with the first telecasts of major league baseball games in 3D.

The New York Yankees' games in Seattle at 10 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday will be available on Time Warner Cable, Verizon's FiOS TV and DirecTV.

The games will air on cable channel 1333 in 3D, but it will take some doing to see them. First, viewers need a 3D-compatible TV with 3D glasses. Time Warner customers must also have a TWC Cable HD or HD/DVR set-top box connected to their TV with an HDMI cable. And, viewers must call Time Warner Cable in advance (800-892-2253) to activate channel 1333 at no charge.

The 3D telecast of the games will have Dave Niehaus and Dave Sims from the Mariners' broadcast team doing play-by-play and YES Network's Ken Singleton doing the color.

3D television sets start at about $1,000, with some popular models selling for $2,000 to $3,800. That makes the price of entry a bit high for many families, and 3D is still an evolving technology, so it's hard to calculate how many TV viewers are 3D-ready.

"We have gotten a lot of calls and a lot of interest from our customers" in 3D programming, said Lara Pritchard, a spokeswoman for Time Warner Cable. "I think we're still in the test and research mode [with 3D]. Sports is something that gives people the chance to test that technology."

Viewers who don't have a 3D setup can see the games in high-definition on the normal YES outlets.

The 3D games are a first for baseball, but not for sports programming. ESPN has done 3D broadcasts for World Cup soccer this year, for the Masters golf tournament, a Harlem Globetrotters game and a USC-Ohio State football game.
