Autumn Porch Decorating Ideas

Porches and entryways provide a wonderful blank canvas for seasonal decorating ideas, and few seasons offer the variety of choices that autumn does. From natural elements such as pumpkins, pine cones, and grapevine wreaths, to bold splashes of color from bright furnishings and fall flowers, an autumn porch will lure everyone outside to enjoy the splendor of the season.



Pumpkins and gourds
Pumpkins and gourds are available in so many different colors and varieties that the decorative combinations are endless. Line them up along walkways or porch staircases, or cluster them in groups of varying shapes and sizes. Pair them with other autumnal elements such as mums and pinecones to create an elegant centerpiece for a side table. Local farmer's markets and grocery stores will have a large selection to choose from at reasonable prices. Or, be adventurous and grow your own.


Floral


Colorful fall flowers are a welcome addition to any front walkway or porch. Mums are quite popular and are available in almost any color. Other varieties include asters, Russian sage and goldenrod. Arrange the flowers in hanging baskets, urns or pedestal stands. Add trailing vinca or ivy vines to give each plant depth and interest.

Nature


Mother Nature provides several decorative items for a porch. Baskets of pine cones look just right scattered about on porch steps or on a small table by the door. Or, arrange them with greenery and flowers for a more elegant touch. Berry branches can be placed in tall, earthen vases, or entwined with grapevines to create a welcoming wreath for a front door. Hay bales paired with mums and a scattering of brightly colored autumn leaves provide a cozy focal point or even another seating choice. Indian corn can be tied to porch pillars to frame an entryway.

Autumn holidays offer a variety of ways to dress up a porch. Whimsical scarecrows, witches, ghosts and pilgrims add charm when seated on a bench. Hanging wreaths can be easily changed, heralding first the arrival of Halloween followed closely by Thanksgiving. Luminary candles with carved holiday scenes may line the front walkway, welcoming guests and trick-or-treaters to your door.

Chairs, tables and loveseats are popular additions to any porch. This extra-special outdoor space can be personalized for the seasons.
