History
Girl milking a cow by hand
1959 milk supply in Oberlech, Vorarlberg, Austria

Animal milk is known to have been used first as human food during the Secondary Products Revolution, around 5,000 BC. It is presumed that when animals such as cattle were first domesticated, it was only for purposes of meat. Dairy products obtained from the animals proved to be a more efficient way of turning uncultivated grasslands into sustenance: the food value of an animal killed for meat can be matched by perhaps one year's worth of milk from the same animal, which will keep producing milk—in convenient daily portions—for years.[5]

Milk byproducts found inside stone age pottery from Turkey indicate processed milk was consumed in 6,500 BC, some thousands of years before it is thought that adult humans had evolved the ability to digest raw milk.[11][12]

DNA evidence extracted from Neolithic skeletons indicates that in 5,500 BC, people in Northern Europe, as all other peoples of the time, were still lactose intolerant. Earthenware vessels found in England and dated to 4,500 BC contain milk byproducts, indicating milk was used in some form, although perhaps not drunk directly.[13]

In 1863, French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur invented pasteurization, a method of killing harmful bacteria in beverages and food products.[14]

In 1884, Doctor Hervey Thatcher, an American inventor from New York, invented the first glass milk bottle, called 'Thatcher's Common Sense Milk Jar', which was sealed with a waxed paper disk.[14] Later, in 1932, plastic-coated paper milk cartons were introduced commercially as a consequence of their invention by Victor W. Farris.[14]

The town of Harvard, Illinois celebrates milk with a summer festival known as "Milk Days". Theirs is a different tradition meant to celebrate dairy farmers in the "Milk Capital of the World."[15]

Milk & the Cancer Connection II:
Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH), Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) & Cancer Risk

"By 1994, when FDA approved the use of rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH)) under Monsanto's trade name Posilac, the label insert, seen only by dairy farmers, admitted that "its use is associated with increased frequency of use of medication in cows for mastitis," and some 20 other toxic effects. Such information on the Posilac label is clearly inconsistent with Hudson's criticism of "happier cow" claims by organic dairy farmers. "

http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterin ... dates/ucm130325.htm

FDA Responds to Citizen Petition on BST
April 21, 2000

On April 20, 2000, FDA responded to a Citizen Petition (Docket No. 99P-4613) from Mr. Robert Cohen concerning Posilac®, the only FDA-approved recombinant bovine growth hormone (rbGH) product for increasing milk production in dairy cattle. FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) approved Monsanto Company's rbGH product, Posilac in November 1993 after a comprehensive review of the product's safety and efficacy, including human food safety.

The petition requested that FDA rescind the approval of Posilac, and immediately remove it from the market based on "new evidence" that the product poses "serious health consequences for human consumers." Later, Mr. Cohen amended this petition, most recently on December 2, 1999. As amended, the petition raised three primary issues in support of the request for withdrawal of Posilac. These issues are as follows: (1) that a recently reported increase in serum levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I) in humans following milk consumption represents absorption of dietary IGF-I, invalidating a basic premise of FDA's safety assessment and proving that IGF-I in milk represents a hazard to human health; (2) that Monsanto changed the manufacturing process for rbGH after the studies supporting the New Animal Drug Application (NADA) were completed, thereby invalidating the research used to support the approval; and (3) that the 90-day toxicology study and/or the information derived from the additional 90 days of the study demonstrate both that rbGH is absorbed and that it is not safe.

In response to Mr. Cohen's petition, FDA said that the Agency believed that these arguments do not demonstrate any human food safety issue related to the use of Posilac. Therefore, the petition requesting withdrawal of the approval of Posilac was denied.

FDA provided detailed scientific information in response to Mr. Cohen's Citizen Petition. Highlights from the Agency's response to the petition are as follows:

1. The safety of IGF-I

FDA has previously maintained and continues to maintain that levels of IGF-I in milk, whether or not from rbGH supplemented cows, are not significant when evaluated against levels of IGF-I endogenously produced and present in humans. IGF-I is normally found in human plasma at concentrations much higher than those found in cow's milk. Reported percentage increases in IGF-I concentrations in milk of rbGH supplemented cows can be misleading because the levels of IGF-I in milk are so low prior to any increase. IGF-I is a normal, but highly variable, constituent of bovine milk with the concentration depending on the animal's stage of lactation, nutritional status, and age. While some studies indicate that levels of IGF-I may statistically increase in the milk of rbGH supplemented cows relative to unsupplemented cows, reported increases are still within the normal variation of IGF-I levels in milk. The Agency pointed out that even if all of the IGF-I in milk was absorbed, and there is insufficient evidence that it would be, the levels of IGF-I in human plasma would not rise by 1%.

2. The manufacturing process for rbGH

FDA was fully aware of the change in the manufacturing process prior to approval of Posilac, and the Agency believed that the change did not result in a different product such that the research done with the product prior to the manufacturing change was invalid. However, to reaffirm that the conclusion the Agency reached in this case was correct, FDA re-examined information previously submitted by Monsanto to support the approval of the rbGH. We also made a site visit to the sponsor to examine batch records that are not required to be submitted to the new animal drug files. Based on this examination, FDA reaffirmed its conclusion that the manufacturing changes resulted in only biologically inconsequential variations in the product used in the safety and effectiveness studies, and therefore, the rbGH product we approved is the same as the product used in the studies.

3. The fate and effects of rbGH in milk

Like most dietary proteins, rbGH is degraded by digestive enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract and not absorbed intact.

In the response, FDA discussed in depth a study that was conducted by Richard, Odaglia, and Deslex, where rats were administered rbGH by oral gavage or subcutaneous injection. The Agency reiterated that no adverse effects of rbGH were observed following 90 continuous days of oral administration or following an additional 90 days of recovery after the cessation of drug administration in this study.

An electronic copy of FDA's response to Mr. Cohen's petition is available on the CVM Home Page . Individuals who do not have access to the Internet, may file a Freedom of Information (FOI) request for this response to: Food and Drug Administration, Freedom of Information Staff (HFI-35), 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20857. FOI requests also may be sent via fax to: (301) 443-1726.

Report on the Food and Drug Administration's Review of the Safety of Recombinant Bovine Somatotropin
This report was updated on April 23, 2009 to clarify quantities of growth hormone found in milk and those used in the 1989 rat study.

INTRODUCTION
On November 5, 1993, following extensive review of the data to support the safety and effectiveness of the product, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA or Agency) approved the Monsanto Companys New Animal Drug Application for Posilac containing a recombinant bovine growth hormone (rbGH) (also known as recombinant bovine somatotropin, rbST, or Sometribove).
Growth hormone (GH) is a protein hormone produced in the pituitary gland of animals including humans and is essential for normal growth, development, and health maintenance. Approximately 60 years ago, it was discovered that injecting cows with GH extracted from cattle pituitary glands increased milk production. In the 1980s, it became technically possible and economically feasible to produce large quantities of bovine GH (bGH) using recombinant DNA processes. The Posilac product contains a recombinant bGH (rbGH) which is essentially the same as (pituitary derived) bGH.
In order to grant approval of Posilac, FDA determined, among other things, that food products from cows treated with rbGH are safe for consumption by humans. Vermont Public Interest Research Group and Rural Vermont have questioned the validity of this finding based on an analysis by reviewers at Health Canada (the Canadian counterpart of the FDA). This analysis, based in large part on a 90-day rat study, challenges the Agency's human health findings and argues that possible adverse health effects of Posilac were not addressed because long term toxicology studies to ascertain human health safety were not required by FDA or conducted by Monsanto.
FDA has completed a comprehensive, page by page audit of the human food safety sections of the investigational new animal drug file and master file supporting the rbGH approval. This audit examined all the studies used in determining the human food safety of rbGH, including the 90-day rat oral toxicity study and the report of the antibody response to oral rbGH upon which the Canadian reviewers relied. Upon determining that a review had not been performed of the antibody data during the course of the original review of the Monsanto application, these data were reviewed in their entirety. As set forth in detail below, FDA believes that the Canadian reviewers did not interpret the study results correctly and that there are no new scientific concerns regarding the safety of milk from cows treated with rbGH. The determination that long term studies were not necessary for assessing the safety of rbGH was based on studies which show that: bGH is biologically inactive in humans even if injected, rbGH is orally inactive, and bGH and rbGH are biologically indistinguishable.

From wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovine_somatotropin

Bovine somatotropin
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

rBST is a product primarily given to dairy cattle by injection to increase milk production.

Bovine somatotropin (abbreviated bST and BST), also known as bovine growth hormone, or BGH, is a protein hormone produced in cattle.

Since 1994 it has been possible to synthesize the hormone using recombinant DNA technology to create recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST), recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), or artificial growth hormone. Monsanto was the first to develop the technology and marketed it as "Posilac" - a brand now owned by Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lilly and Company.

The United States is the only developed nation to permit humans to drink milk from cows given artificial growth hormone.[1] Posilac was banned from use in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and most of Europe, by 2000 or earlier.

In the United States, public opinion has caused a number of products and retailers to become rBST-free.[2][3][4][5]

Q  Why Not Drink Milk?
I have heard that milk is not as good for us as we once thought. I love fat-free/skim milk and probably could adjust to soy or rice milk if it is healthier. What are the pros and cons?

A  Answer (Published 2/19/2003)
Updated on 3/30/2005

The notion that milk is good for all of us throughout life has been fostered by the dairy industry. Except for people of northern European origin, most adults worldwide can't digest lactose, the natural sugar in milk. This is because as we mature, our bodies stop making the enzyme that breaks it down. As a result, many may develop gas, cramps and/or diarrhea whenever milk is consumed.

But lactose intolerance isn't the only problem with milk and milk products. The milk protein, casein, can irritate the immune system and stimulate mucus production, worsening allergy symptoms. This is why milk consumption is associated with recurrent childhood ear infections, eczema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, and sinus conditions. Even those who are not allergic to milk, like people who have autoimmune diseases or digestive problems, may find that their symptoms improve when they eliminate milk and milk products.

Substituting soy or rice milk for cow's milk isn't as simple as it sounds. Rice milk contains little protein and for that reason is not a good milk substitute for children, unless you add other protein sources to their diets. Soy milk is protein-rich and can work well as a milk substitute, but you may have to experiment with different brands to find one with a taste you like. Although soy milk is high in calcium, it doesn't provide as much as cow's milk so look for a calcium-fortified brand. I also recommend that you buy organic soy products and look for soy milk brands that do not contain the thickening agent carrageenan, a seaweed derivative, which I do not view as safe. If you're watching your weight, choose from among the many available low-fat products.
